Vine Trail
Start and finish of the 3.5 km long trail is the parking lot at the sports field of Glottertal. The trail goes up the wine-growers' path directly into the vine plantation "Roter Bur" (information plate 2-3). Having managed a rather steep climb, the visitors enjoy an impressing panorama (information plate 4-10). After about 1.8 km, it is possible to make a stop at the restaurant "Eichbergstüble" (information plate 11). There are several possibilities to go down:
a) You take the way through the vine plantation "Roter Bur" behind the "Eichbergstüble" till you reach "Schiffsweg"; here you follow the wine-growers' path until you come to the street "Am Eichberg" (information plate 16-17).
b) Direct way down from "Eichbergstüble"; on the wine-growers' path back to the starting point or
c) Then you continue the nature trail by crossing "Talstraße" at "Talstrasse/Am Eichberg" and reach "Kandelstraße" via the path across the fields (information plate 18-19).
From here you are granted a wonderful panoramic view to the whole valley of Glottertal and the vineyards just left. You follow the trail past the protestant church till you arrive at the Wine-Growers' Co-operative of Glottertal (information plate 20). Here you can make a stop, too; you can get information on the different Glottertal wines and you can taste them.
Explanations / Vine Trail
Glottertal is one of the smallest wine-growing communities of Germany. The geological as well as climatic situation of Glottertal favours vine growing and is decisive of the significant and unique structure of the Glottertal wines. The vine trail explains these aspects in detail and informs on other subjects, like:
- "life in the vineyards", the vineyards as a biotope network being a living space for animals and plants.
- The history of wine-growing.
- Structure of the vines with 80 % "Spätburgunder" ingredient.
- History of the "old Glottertal wine", today called "Scheffelwein" that is felt in legs and feet only and does not go to the head.
- Where does the term "Roter Bur" come from?
- Why is the protection of the environment and plants that important to the vine?
- Why should organic fertilizers known from agriculture be used in wine-growing, too?
- Description of the hard work in the steep vineyards: It takes 20 minutes to produce 1 liter of wine in Glottertal whereas the same amount is produced in 4 minutes in regions where work can be done by machines.
- Information on the organization of the big family of 130 members belonging to the Wine-Growers' Co-operative of Glottertal.
- "In Glottertal, we know each vine personally!"
