Nature Trail
Along the cattle shed circular route leading through the forest "Badwald", numerous informative plates inform you on the different functions of a forest, the duties of a forestry close to nature, the most important types of trees and their use. The charts deal with the questions "What is dead wood?", "Why is dead wood that important?" and "Why is a nature-like, untidy forest with heaps of brushwood more worthful to nature than a cleared-up one?"
A highlight for kids is the "Pirschpfad" (Stalking Path). Along this narrow path lots of animals have established their hiding place. Are you able to discover them?
Starting point of this nature trail is the new building of the rehabilitation clinic "Glotterbad". You best park your car on the parking lot belonging to the open-air swimming pool of Glottertal. Then you follow the sign of the forest nature trail. The path is 5 km long at a slight gradient (difference of height: 150 m only). Though the nature trail follows footpaths well cared for, we recommend solid foot wear. The nature trail will take you about 2 hours.
Information on Nature Trail
Forest functions have significantly changed during the last few decades. In former times, it primarily served as a source of wood and a ”playground for hunters. Today people use the forest as a living space where they can relax and recover. Additional functions are: the forest filters the air and feeds it with oxygen; the forest binds carbon dioxide that is principally responsible for the greenhouse effect; it controls erosion and landslides; the forest absorbs rainwater which is filtered and partly led back into the soil; it thus provides drinking water and averts floods. Moreover, the forest is the living space for lots of animal and plant species.
The duty of modern forestry is to protect our forests taking into account the numerous valuable functions they fulfill and - at the same time - to meet the economic demands of the forest owners. The informative plates of our nature trail inform you about some of these aspects. Besides, we introduce to you the most important species of trees and give information on how the different types of wood can be used. The stalking path "Pirschpfad" which allows to discover the hidden animals of the forest is not only meant for kids. Our nature trail leads through the so-called "Badwald" which is an officially proved grove for rest and recover that belongs to the rehabilitation clinic "Glotterbad". The attentive visitor will notice that this grove looks a little bit strange. Indeed, the Glottertal forest rangers try to leave it nature-like: they renounce at clear-cuttings; there are plantations of less frequent types of trees like the sorb-tree, the haw, the walnut tree and the cherry tree, small mosaic-like forest sections that are attractive to the eye and - even more important - a valuable living space for lots of animals. If you like to visit the nature trail as a group (i.e. six persons at minimum), I kindly invite you to fix a date for a guided tour.
