Signposting

All Black Forest hiking paths have been signposted according to a standardized new system. The paths near Glottertal centre are marked with a yellow rhomb, paths leading to the long-distance trails with a blue rhomb (in Glottertal - for example - the "Präsident-Thoma-Weg"). Long-distance trails have distinctive signs, like, for example, the Baden Wine Hiking Trail in West Glottertal or the "Kandelhöhenweg" (passing Mount Kandel) in South Glottertal.

Information:
It was Dr. Emil Thoma who gave his name to the "Präsident-Thoma-Weg". He was Lord Mayor of Freiburg and from 1905 to 1920 President of the Black Forest Rambling Club "Schwarzwaldverein".

Cycle and Mountainbike Tracks

Glottertal is the ideal starting point for cycle tours. A wide net of cycle paths, plain and easy to ride, extends to the west of the valley. For more professional riders there are demanding tracks uphill into the Upper Black Forest. For cycle and mountainbike maps, please turn to the Tourist Information Glottertal.

Mount Kandel

Mount Kandel (1243 m above sea-level) is nearly 1000 meters higher than Glottertal centre. It is the "home" mountain of the four communities: Waldkirch, Simonswald, St. Peter and Glottertal. At every time of the year, lots of leisure-time activities are offered at Mount Kandel. In winter, there are cross-country ski tracks and ski-lifts. In spring, summer and fall, Mount Kandel is a popular hiking area. Lots of paths with incomparable panoramic views invite to discover the beautiful landscape on a hike, e.g. the "Kandelhöhenweg" leading from Oberkirch to Freiburg or a tour around the top of Mount Kandel. There are numerous nice paths to the different adjacent communities you can go. When the weather is fine, you'll have a wonderful view to the Alpes. In former times, Mount Kandel was regarded as the witch's mountain of Breisgau. Witches are said to have met at the huge rock to the north-west of Mount Kandel. It's noteworthy that the very top of the Kandel rock broke off in the Walpurgis-night from April 30th to May 1st.

The "Urgraben" (an old drain) - one of the most important technical achievements in Europe

In the Middle Ages, the Glottertal lead and silver mines were the richest ones in Breisgau. The owners were the mighty dukes of Zähringen. After their death, the mines, worked by rich patricians, were owned by the earls of Freiburg. The most important event was the construction of a huge drain of a total length of 22 km in 1284. This so-called "Urgraben" was a canal leading from "Zweribach" via three watersheds downhill into the valleys of Suggental and Glottertal. The water obtained by this construction was used for the run of a water lifting-system, the first one in Central Europe. In Suggental, the mines were destroyed by a thunderstorm in 1288, in Glottertal during the war in 1298. Though still in the 14th century silver was mined, this part of Southern Black Forest history was neary forgotten until hikers discovered ruines of the old drain and traces of the mines.

Numerous wine-growing estates and inns along the trail invite to make a stop and to taste a glass of wine. You'll find the Breisgau Vine Hiking Trail at the west border of the valley of Glottertal, adjacent to the "Markgräfler Wiiwegli" in the south and the "Ortenauer Weinpfad" in the north.
