Nature Trail
The nature trail leads you around the centre of Glottertal on a 3 km path through the richly structured landscape of Glottertal. The tour starts at "Waldemar-Koch-Weg", continues on the wine-growers' path along the vineyards to the open-air swimming pool of Glottertal. From there you take the "Schiffsweg" southwards and cross the L 112. You go on taking the "Ahlenbachweg-Kandelstraße" and come back to your starting point. On 11 wooden plates visitors are given instructions how to deal with nature.
There is a guiding plate at the beginning of the path offering an overview of the different subjects. Each plate refers to natural phenomena in the surroundings of Glottertal and gives information on the various biospheres. The aim is to make the visitors see the beauties of nature - a flowery meadow, for example - and to recognize that even a dead apple-tree is a valuable living space for lots of endangered insects. On guided tours, visitors can directly watch birds and insects at their nesting sites.
Information on Nature Trail
The nature trails offers the opportunity to get into close contact with nature and to get informed on the different projects launched for the protection of nature. In the following, two projects of the Glottertal nature trail are described in detail
Birds' Protection Hedge
In former times, hedges belonged to the natural structures of landscapes. They developed at the edges of fields, pastures and terraced slopes. Hedges fulfill various functions: They protect against the wind and guarantee a favourable climate. Moreover, they are the living space for numerous animal species, like hedgehogs and earth toads. Butterflies love to take a sun-bath on the leaves of hedges and different groups of insects - ladybirds, for example - search for food there. Birds use hedges as breeding and resting place as well as food biotope. Especially in winter, seeds and berries are their favourites. The red-backed shrike is an animal that principally lives in hedges. It loves to build its nests in hedges rich of prickles and thorns. Its favourite bushes are blackthorn, whitethorn and dogrose. Its food mainly consists of insects and mice. The red-backed shrike can still be found in Glottertal. Other typical species of birds that prefer hedges are the white throat, the yellow hammer and the linnet.
Peasant's Garden
With their useful and ornamental plants known for centuries, traditional peasant's gardens are part of our cultural heritage. A characteristic feature of a peasant's garden is the mixture of vegetables, flowers and berry bushes. This way of planting has a lot of advantages compared to modern ornamental gardens. Its owner is provided with vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers throughout the year.
Peasant's gardens are favourable for numerous insects, like wild bees and butterflies, too. The regional, traditional plants offer enough blossoms to feed them.
Peasant's gardens do not necessarily belong to farm-houses only. Sometimes, also private house-owners prefer natural peasant's gardens. Ornamental, medical and herbal plants known since 1900 are
dahlia, wallflower, marigold, zinnia, broad-leaved garlic, borage, lovage, box-tree, lilac and lacecap.
The planting and tend of peasant's gardens with traditional useful and ornamental plants contribute to a warm and pleasant image of a village and produce the feeling of being at home.
