In summer 1984, a team of the German TV channel "ZDF" arrived at Hinterzarten. At 31 different places they took the shots of the TV series "Black Forest Clinic".
On October 22nd 1985, the first episode of a total number of 73 was broadcasted. Every week, up to 28 million people watched the "Black Forest Clinic", the most successful series in Germany. But its popularity was not only limited to Germany. "The Black Forest Clinic" was sold to 38 foreign countries
The so-called "Carlsbau" in Glottertal - in those days a sanatorium of the Insurance Board of Württemberg " served as scenery for the series. The places where the different shots were taken, especially Glottertal, attracted lots of tourists. The media interest was enormous. At Christmas and New Year 1985/86, the "Black Forest Clinic" dominated TV and media in Germany. The "Carlsbau" had become a tourist attraction. With its traditional Black Forest construction, this building, embedded in the picturesque landscape of Glottertal, produced the feeling of romanticism people were looking for. It really stood out against the majority of clinics we know.
When additional shots were taken in 1986, masses of tourists visited Glottertal. In order to do their work, the ZDF film teams had to block the area around the clinic.
Most people who had watched the series thougt that the various places shown on TV were in close proximity to each other. Coming to Glottertal they recognized that Lake Titisee was 35 km away from the valley and the private estate of the Brinkmann family in Grafenhausen which is even 60 km away from Glottertal.
Moreover, business in the Carlsbau went on and still does today; it's a real clinic that can only be visited from outside.
In summer of the year 2004, special shots were taken on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the series. For the first time, the original "Black Forest Clinic" actors met again. The shots were taken like in 1984: the location shooting in front of the "Carlsbau", clinic scenes in the hospital of Titisee-Neustadt, family scenes in the "Hüsli", a regional museum in Grafenhausen, further location scenes at different nice places in the Black Forest.
The highlight of this special shooting was the wedding in the baroque church on the flower isle "Mainau" at Lake Constance. More than 14 million people watched this special series broadcasted on February 20th 2005..
